Egyptologist's note
Eight days on Cleopatra VII's Egypt — the Ptolemaic and early Roman period, c.51–30 BCE. We start in Alexandria where she lived, ruled, and died; we move to her temple-restoration sites at Dendera and Edfu; we end in Cairo at the Greco-Roman Museum where her likeness sits beside Caesarion. This is later Egypt — Hellenistic, multilingual, urban — and it's the period most short tours skip.
Historical context
Cleopatra VII (r. 51–30 BCE) was the last active Ptolemaic pharaoh, the only one who learned Egyptian, and the political target of the Roman civil wars. Her temple program at Dendera (where her relief is one of two surviving formal portraits) and Edfu was deliberate — she ran the Ptolemaic playbook of legitimating Greek rule by patronising indigenous Egyptian religion. Alexandria in her time was the largest city west of the Indus, with a population around 500,000 and a library cataloguing the known world.
Insider tip from your guide
The famous 'Cleopatra' relief at Dendera is on the rear external wall — most groups miss it because guides default to the interior tour. Ask specifically. It's high; bring a 70mm lens or longer.
Meet your representative at Cairo Airport, private transfer to hotel. Welcome briefing with your Egyptologist guide. Evening at leisure.
