Egyptologist's note
Sixteen days at the highest comfort tier we offer: the Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel-Alexandria arc plus a Western Desert detour or Red Sea finish, all on private vehicles, private cruisers, and Egyptologist-led from arrival. Combines the depth of the 14-day Egypt-in-Depth with the access tier of Secret Doors.
Historical context
The 'Grand Tour' of Egypt as a concept dates to the early 19th century, when Mehmet Ali's reforms opened the country to European travellers. Edward Lane's 1836 'Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians' essentially codified what the educated traveller's circuit should be: Cairo, Memphis, Thebes, Aswan, the Cataract. The modern grand tour adds Abu Simbel (re-cut in the 1960s) and Alexandria (which in Lane's day was less developed for visitors). Sixteen days is the Lane-era pace.
Insider tip from your guide
If you can travel late October to mid-November, do. Temperatures sit at 26–30°C, the Nile is at its highest after the monsoon flood through Sudan, the cruise is at peak comfort, and the dawn alignment at Abu Simbel falls on 22 October.
Meet your representative at Cairo Airport, private transfer to hotel. Welcome briefing with your Egyptologist guide. Evening at leisure.
